What Is Special Education?

Special education is a tailored approach to teaching and supporting children with diverse learning needs or disabilities. Why Special Education Matters

Components of Special Education

Assessment and Evaluation: Special education begins with a thorough assessment to identify a child’s strengths, needs, and areas requiring support. This assessment may include standardized testing, observations, interviews, and input from parents, teachers, and other professionals.

Individualized Education Plan (IEP): Based on the assessment findings, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed for each child with a disability. The IEP outlines the child’s educational goals, accommodations, modifications, and support services needed to address their unique learning needs and facilitate progress.

Specially Designed Instruction: Special education provides specially designed instruction tailored to meet the individualized needs of each child. This may include differentiated instruction, multisensory teaching techniques, assistive technology, adaptive materials, and individual or small-group instruction.

Collaboration and Teamwork: Special education involves collaboration among educators, therapists, parents, and other professionals to support the child’s learning and development. A multidisciplinary team works together to implement the IEP, monitor progress, and make adjustments as needed to ensure the child’s success.
